Our community breathed a collective sigh of relief early Sunday morning when Joel Medina, a 17-year-old boy with autism, was found safe after spending two harrowing days and nights in a wooded nature preserve near his Egg Harbor Township home.
Joel disappeared from his home on Friday, March 20, wearing only shorts and a T-shirt. What followed was an extraordinary display of coordination and determination as local, state, and federal agencies joined forces to bring him home safely.
A Community-Wide Search Effort
Egg Harbor Township Police immediately responded to the initial report, but as hours turned into days with no sign of Joel, the search expanded dramatically. Search and rescue teams from Atlantic, Cape May, Cumberland, and Gloucester counties converged on the area, demonstrating the kind of regional cooperation that defines our communities in times of crisis.
New Jersey State Police deployed helicopters to scan the heavily wooded terrain from above, while the US Coast Guard joined the aerial search. On the ground, K-9 teams worked tirelessly alongside drone operators, searching every inch of the challenging landscape filled with mud, downed trees, and dense brush.
A Critical Discovery
By Saturday, March 21, with still no trace of Joel, Egg Harbor Township Police reached out to the FBI Newark's Atlantic City Resident Agency. The FBI deployed their Critical Incident Response Group plane to search the nature preserve near Joel's home—a decision that would prove lifesaving.
Late Saturday night at 11:57 p.m., FBI pilots spotted Joel curled up next to a tree deep in the woods. Temperatures had plummeted to 35 degrees, making the discovery all the more urgent. At 12:29 a.m. Sunday, agents reached Joel and began the difficult journey out of the preserve, navigating treacherous terrain in darkness.
At 1:38 a.m. on Sunday, March 22, Joel was reunited with his family. Paramedics waiting on scene immediately checked him over, and he is now recovering at home.
