New Jersey voters made their voices heard Tuesday night, setting the stage for several competitive congressional races this November. With razor-thin party margins at both the federal and state levels, these primary results could significantly impact the balance of power in Washington.
In the marquee race of the evening, Justin Murphy emerged victorious in the Republican primary for U.S. Senate, defeating Richard Tabor, Robert Lebovics, and Alex Zdan. Murphy will now face incumbent Democratic Sen. Cory Booker in the general election. Booker, who has represented New Jersey in Congress since 2013, ran unopposed in Tuesday's Democratic primary.
This isn't Murphy's first Senate run. He previously competed in the 2024 Republican primary, finishing third behind Christine Serrano-Glassner and eventual nominee Curtis Bashaw. His platform this cycle calls for sweeping changes to the federal government, including abolishing the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and the Department of Education while making the Department of Government Efficiency permanent. Murphy also advocates for strengthening both the southern and northern borders and implementing a system to track visa holders.
South Jersey House Races Take Shape
In our region, Cape May Mayor Zack Mullock won a competitive four-way Democratic primary for House District 2, defeating Tim Alexander, Terri Reese, and Bayly Winder. The district encompasses most of South Jersey, including parts of Ocean and Gloucester counties and all of Salem, Cumberland, Atlantic, and Cape May counties.
Mullock will challenge Rep. Jeff Van Drew, a former Democrat now serving his fourth term in Congress. The Cape May mayor's platform focuses on restricting corporations' ability to bulk purchase homes, investing in renewable energy with an emphasis on solar power, and overturning Citizens United.
Further north in the Third Congressional District, Michael McGuire secured the Republican nomination, defeating Jason Cullen and Justin Barbera. The district serves most of Burlington County and portions of Mercer and Monmouth counties. McGuire, a former U.S. Marine and NYPD officer, will attempt to unseat one-term Democratic Representative Herbert Conaway, Jr.
McGuire's campaign emphasizes putting people first over politics and service over self-interest. His top priority centers on reducing costs for housing, energy, and healthcare by cutting what he describes as wasteful and ineffective government spending. He also supports banning members of Congress from trading stocks and implementing term limits.
With these primary races now decided, our community can expect an active campaign season leading up to the November general election. The outcomes of these contests could play a crucial role in determining which party controls Congress and shapes policy for years to come.
