Our community's wrestlers showed up in force at Boardwalk Hall this Saturday, delivering a powerhouse performance at the NJSIAA individual wrestling championships in Atlantic City. Shore Conference athletes claimed six state titles and one runner-up finish, demonstrating the depth and talent that defines wrestling in our region.
Leading the charge was Rumson-Fair Haven Regional's Sonny Amato, who made history by becoming his school's first two-time state champion. The Iowa commit shut out Nicholas Schwartz of Delbarton 8-0 in the 150-pound final. Amato, who also captured the 144-pound title two years ago and finished third last season, capped his high school career with a dominant performance that showcased why he's heading to one of the nation's premier wrestling programs.
Christian Brothers Academy continued its wrestling excellence with two champions on the day. Bobby Duffy, another Iowa commit, delivered a statement victory in the 144-pound final with a 14-1 major decision over Rutgers commit Ryan DeGeorge of Delbarton. The win marked Duffy's third consecutive victory over DeGeorge, having previously defeated him 6-2 on February 22. After placing fifth a year ago, Duffy's dominant championship run represents a remarkable turnaround.
CBA's Paul Kenny provided the exclamation point on the Shore's exceptional day, pinning Tommy Marchetti of Delbarton at 3:38 in the 120-pound final. Kenny's victory capped what tournament observers called a brilliant showing for Shore Conference boys.
Howell's Tanner Hodgins added another title at 215 pounds, defeating Nicolas Gonzalez of Mt. Olive by major decision, 20-7. The junior made a strategic decision to compete at 215 in the postseason after alternating between 190 and 215 during the dual-meet season—a gamble that paid off handsomely.
At the lighter weights, Middletown North's Thomas Blewett pulled off an upset for the ages, dethroning top-seeded Will Cruz of Paulsboro to claim the 106-pound championship as the No. 2 seed. Meanwhile, Lacey's Killian Coluccio secured the 113-pound title with a 7-1 decision over Charles Esposito of St. Joseph Montvale, giving the Shore its fifth champion of the tournament.
St. John Vianney's Bubba Gavrish represented the Shore well in the 165-pound final, though he fell to Jayden James of Delbarton by pin at 1:23, earning runner-up honors.
The six state championships represent a tremendous showing for Shore Conference wrestling, reinforcing our region's reputation as a breeding ground for elite talent. With multiple wrestlers now heading to Division I programs and several underclassmen among the champions, the future looks bright for Shore Conference wrestling as we continue to produce athletes who compete at the highest levels.
