Our community can breathe a sigh of relief tonight as a missing teenager has been safely reunited with his family after a two-day search that brought neighbors, law enforcement, and volunteers together in Egg Harbor Township.
Joel Medina, 16, who lives with autism, ran away from his home near 4th Avenue behind the Shore Mall off West Jersey Avenue on the afternoon of Friday, March 20. For two long days, his family and the community held onto hope as search efforts intensified across South Jersey.
That hope was rewarded on Sunday when Joel was found safe. Egg Harbor Township Police shared the joyful news, expressing gratitude to everyone who participated in the search and never gave up.
"JOEL is ok and was just reunited with FAMILY!" police announced. "Thank you to EVERYONE that never quit, never lost hope and assisted with this HAPPY ENDING! We will do a larger post later, as it's been a long two days!"
The case had been classified as a critical missing person situation given Joel's age and the fact that he lives with autism, which can present unique challenges when someone becomes separated from their family. The extensive search involved local law enforcement and community members who refused to give up hope.
Police have indicated they will release additional details about how Joel was located and the circumstances surrounding his safe return. For now, what matters most is that a young member of our community is back home where he belongs.
This outcome serves as a powerful reminder of what we can accomplish when our community comes together. In times of crisis, the collective effort of caring neighbors, dedicated first responders, and a family that never stopped believing made all the difference in bringing Joel home safely.
