Our community witnessed a dramatic scene on the afternoon of March 21 when flames and heavy black smoke billowed from the roof of the ShopRite at 3003 English Creek Avenue in Egg Harbor Township.
Shortly after 4 p.m., emergency dispatchers received numerous calls from concerned residents reporting the structure fire. What they found upon arrival was a challenging situation: multiple solar panels on the store's roof had become engulfed in flames, creating the intense black smoke visible throughout the area.
The Cardiff Volunteer Fire Company led the response, deploying multiple trucks to the scene. Their crews confirmed the severity of the situation immediately upon arrival, with firefighters facing the dual challenge of rooftop flames and solar panel infrastructure.
This incident showcased the strength of our regional emergency response network. Firefighters from Scullville, Atlantic City, Pleasantville, and Northfield joined Cardiff crews in a coordinated effort that lasted two hours. The multi-department collaboration proved essential in bringing the fire under control and preventing further damage to the shopping center.
Thankfully, the incident concluded with the best possible outcome: no injuries were reported among firefighters, store employees, or shoppers. The successful containment of the blaze stands as a testament to the quick response and professional expertise of our local fire departments.
Solar panel fires present unique challenges for firefighters, as the panels can continue generating electricity even during emergencies, creating additional hazards. The two-hour response time reflects the careful, methodical approach required to safely extinguish such fires while protecting both personnel and the structure itself.
The ShopRite location serves as a vital resource for residents throughout Egg Harbor Township and surrounding communities. While the extent of damage to the store remains unclear, the swift action by our emergency responders likely prevented what could have been a far more devastating loss for our area.
