Our community rallied together this weekend when Joel Medina, a 17-year-old autistic teen from Egg Harbor Township, went missing Friday afternoon. After more than 24 hours of searching, authorities confirmed early Sunday morning that Joel had been found safe and reunited with his family.

Joel walked away from his home around 3 p.m. Friday in the area of Fourth Avenue, located behind the Shore Mall off West Jersey Avenue. What followed was an intensive search operation that showcased the best of our community spirit.

Local law enforcement deployed advanced technology including drones and FLIR thermal cameras to aid in the search. But technology alone didn't tell the whole story—neighbors stepped up in a powerful way, joining the effort as hours turned into a full day and beyond.

Police announced Joel's safe recovery at 1:30 a.m. Sunday, bringing relief to a community that had been holding its collective breath. Authorities confirmed he was found in good condition, though specific details about where he was located or the circumstances of his discovery were not immediately released.

This incident serves as a reminder of how quickly our community mobilizes when one of our own needs help. The cooperation between law enforcement and residents demonstrates the strength of the bonds we share here in Egg Harbor Township.

For families with loved ones who may wander, this weekend's events underscore the importance of having safety plans in place and the reassurance that our community stands ready to help when needed.
