A routine traffic stop on an Interstate 90 ramp in Wisconsin transformed into a rescue mission when a state trooper learned that someone had thrown kittens from a moving vehicle. The incident resulted in an unexpected adoption and a new companion for the responding officer.
Trooper Brody Schmitz of the Wisconsin State Patrol responded to assist a motorist who had stopped on the ramp. Upon arriving at the scene, the trooper heard an account that would alter the course of his day and ultimately his life.
According to a Facebook post from the Wisconsin State Patrol, the motorist reported witnessing someone throw kittens from a moving vehicle. While authorities were unable to locate the offending vehicle, they did find one of the animals that had been discarded.
Trooper Schmitz took immediate action to ensure the kitten received proper care. He transported the animal to a nearby shelter where it could be examined and cared for while he completed his shift. However, the trooper made his intentions clear from the outset, informing shelter staff that he wished to adopt the kitten himself.
The tuxedo kitten, now named Toby, found a permanent home with his rescuer. Images shared by the Wisconsin State Patrol show the young feline being carried in the trooper's arms and hat, already appearing comfortable with his new guardian.
The story resonated with members of the public, many of whom shared similar experiences in the comment section of the patrol's social media post. One commenter noted that they had rescued a cat from a car engine in Detroit, calling police to explain why they were accessing the vehicle. Another recounted responding to a call about an aggressive animal, only to discover a frightened kitten that ended up riding along on patrol before going home with the officer.
The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported that the Wisconsin State Patrol did not immediately respond to requests for additional details about the incident.
Animal cruelty cases involving the abandonment or mistreatment of pets remain a concern for law enforcement agencies. While the individual responsible for throwing the kittens from the vehicle was not apprehended, at least one of the animals found safety and a permanent home thanks to the swift action of a dedicated trooper.
The incident serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of law enforcement work, where officers may find themselves responding to situations far beyond traditional traffic stops or criminal investigations. For Trooper Schmitz and Toby, what began as a disturbing act of cruelty resulted in an unexpected partnership between officer and feline companion.
