Window Washer Uses Social Media to Spotlight Struggling KC Restaurants

A Kansas City window washing business is transforming the way local restaurants connect with customers, one squeegee stroke at a time. Davis Roethler, co-owner of Window Wolf, has built a social media following of 8,700 Instagram users by offering free window cleanings to struggling establishments while documenting the personal stories behind each business.

The approach represents a significant departure from traditional food influencer content. Rather than focusing solely on menu items, Roethler uses his experience as a social media content manager to highlight the people preparing the food and the challenges they face in an industry notorious for high failure rates.

"When you just look at the data, opening up a restaurant, from a business standpoint, it's a terrible idea. It's a huge risk. The numbers are not on your side," Roethler told Kansas City Star's Rashad Alexander. "When you realize that, you realize that there's so much opportunity in KC to help out these small businesses to make sure that they're not part of that statistic of closing down."

The strategy has produced measurable results for participating businesses. Dunn Deal BBQ, operated by pitmaster Gerald Dunn, who also serves as director of entertainment at the American Jazz Museum in Kansas City, has benefited from Roethler's platform. Other establishments including Tasty African Food KC, Kolaches and Coffee, and Simply Grand Kitchen and Creamery have received similar exposure.

The impact extends beyond temporary publicity. Kolaches and Coffee may have avoided closure entirely due to the attention generated by Roethler's content. Dunn Deal and Simply Grand Kitchen, located in close proximity to one another, now experience lines extending around the block following their features on the Window Wolf channel.

Roethler records his interactions using Meta glasses, capturing authentic conversations with owners, cooks, and family members. His longer-form video reviews regularly accumulate tens of thousands of views, providing sustained visibility for featured businesses. The content creator frequently returns to profiled establishments, continuing to document their stories while providing additional window cleaning services.

Despite the growing influence of his social media presence, window cleaning remains the core business of Window Wolf. The company currently offers gutter cleaning, window cleaning, and pressure washing services throughout the Kansas City metropolitan area. Plans for expansion include adding high-rise window washing to the service portfolio.

The model demonstrates how small businesses can leverage social media platforms to support one another within local communities. For restaurant owners operating on thin margins, the combination of complimentary services and substantial marketing exposure provides tangible relief in an economically challenging industry. Roethler's approach offers a blueprint for how service providers can create mutual value while building authentic connections with the businesses they serve.
