Officers Rescue Dog from Laguna Drive House Fire

Our community witnessed an act of courage this week when two local police officers rushed into a burning home to rescue a trapped family dog.

On March 2, first responders raced to 207 Laguna Drive in Egg Harbor Township after a vigilant neighbor spotted smoke billowing from the residence and immediately called 911. What happened next was captured on police body cameras, showing the split-second decisions officers must make when lives are on the line.

Officers Darren Dewitt and Chris Wagner arrived to find the home filling with smoke. Unable to reach the homeowners and with no time to waste, the two officers made the decision to force entry. They kicked in the door and ventured into the smoke-filled residence.

The officers methodically searched each room to ensure no one was trapped inside. During their search, they discovered the family's dog, still inside the dangerous environment. Without hesitation, they carried the frightened animal to safety.

While battling the blaze, one firefighter sustained injuries but is expected to make a full recovery. The quick response from our emergency personnel prevented what could have been a far more tragic outcome.

Fire officials determined that a heating unit in the home's attic likely sparked the fire—a sobering reminder as we continue through the colder months. This incident underscores the importance of regular maintenance on heating systems and working smoke detectors.

The body camera footage released by officials offers a powerful glimpse into the dangers our first responders face and the compassion they show, even for our four-legged family members. For the family on Laguna Drive, Officers Dewitt and Wagner's quick thinking meant one less heartbreak on an already difficult day.
