Our hearts are heavy as the search continues for a Philadelphia teenager who disappeared in the waters off Wildwood earlier this week. Davoris Carter III, a 14-year-old student, went missing Monday afternoon while swimming in the ocean during a school trip, and rescue teams have been working tirelessly to locate him.
The incident unfolded around 1:30 p.m. Monday near Schellenger Avenue, when beachgoers noticed a group of swimmers in distress. With no lifeguards on duty at the time, concerned witnesses flagged down a Wildwood police officer for help. Emergency responders, including firefighters, police, and beach patrol personnel, rushed to the scene and managed to pull three swimmers from the water. One person was transported to a hospital in stable condition.
Davoris, however, remains unaccounted for as of Wednesday, leaving his family and our community searching for answers.
The teenager's father, Davoris Carter III's namesake, has expressed frustration over the circumstances that led to his son entering the water. He questions why students were permitted to swim in the ocean and believes that chaperones should have provided closer supervision, particularly for children with special needs.
"My son should have not been in that water," he told NBC10. "Nobody should have been in that water."
Davoris is a student at Delta School in Northeast Philadelphia. The school's director responded to concerns by telling NBC10 that students on the trip were appropriately supervised, with staff members present in equal numbers to the students.
The tragedy highlights critical safety considerations for school outings, particularly those involving water activities. The absence of lifeguards at the time of the incident raises questions about timing and risk assessment for such trips. Many Jersey Shore beaches don't have lifeguards on duty until later in the season or during certain hours, making it essential for groups to plan accordingly.
As the search for Davoris continues, our community stands with his family during this agonizing wait. The incident serves as a sobering reminder of the ocean's unpredictable nature and the importance of water safety, especially when our young people are involved.
Anyone with information about this incident is encouraged to contact the Wildwood Police Department as authorities continue their efforts to bring closure to this family.
