Democracy thrives when voters can look their potential representatives in the eye and ask the questions that matter most. That's exactly what our community will experience on March 23, when the South Jersey Democratic Women's Forum hosts an innovative candidate engagement event in Northfield.
The "Speed Rating the Candidates" event breaks away from traditional town hall formats, offering something far more personal and dynamic. Beginning at 6:30 p.m. at American Legion Post 295 on Mill Road, the evening will feature five Democratic candidates competing for New Jersey's Second Congressional District seat: Tim Alexander, William Finn, Zachary Mullock, Terri Reese, and Bayly Winder.
A Fresh Approach to Voter Engagement
What makes this event particularly compelling is its structure. Rather than candidates standing at podiums delivering prepared remarks, they'll rotate from table to table, spending dedicated time with small groups of constituents. Think of it as speed dating for democracy—but instead of finding romance, voters are finding the representative who best aligns with their values and concerns.
There's no script, no pre-screened questions, and no filters. This format creates space for authentic dialogue where voters can probe deeper on issues that affect their daily lives, from healthcare and education to economic development and environmental concerns facing our coastal communities.
"This event is about transparency, accessibility, and empowering voters," explained Maureen Leidy, President of the South Jersey Democratic Women's Forum. "We want constituents to have the opportunity to ask the questions that matter most to them — directly, face-to-face, and without filters. Democracy works best when voters can engage openly with the people seeking to represent them."
Why This Matters for Our Community
In an era when political discourse often feels distant and impersonal, events like this remind us that representative government works best when it's truly representative. Our Second Congressional District encompasses diverse communities across South Jersey, each with unique challenges and opportunities. Having the chance to evaluate candidates in real-time conversations helps voters make informed decisions that will shape our region's future.
The South Jersey Democratic Women's Forum has long championed civic engagement and informed voting across Atlantic and Cape May counties. This nonpartisan approach to candidate forums—focusing on accessibility and genuine dialogue—serves voters regardless of party affiliation who want to understand where candidates stand on critical issues.
How to Participate
Space is limited for this intimate format, making early registration essential. Community members interested in attending must RSVP by Friday, March 13, by emailing sjdwf.atlanticcape@gmail.com. Organizers recommend arriving no later than 6:00 p.m. for check-in, giving attendees time to settle in before the candidate rotations begin at 6:30 p.m.
For those preparing to attend, consider bringing questions about local concerns—whether that's infrastructure improvements, support for small businesses, protecting our shorelines, or ensuring quality healthcare access. This is your opportunity to evaluate not just what candidates promise, but how they think on their feet and respond to the real concerns of real constituents.
The American Legion Post 295 is located at 232 Mill Road in Northfield. Those interested in learning more about the candidates before the event can visit their respective campaign websites, though the beauty of this format is discovering who they are through direct conversation.
In a time when many feel disconnected from the political process, events like "Speed Rating the Candidates" offer something increasingly rare: genuine human connection between voters and those who seek to serve them. It's democracy in action, right here in our community.
