Will Smith's Former Friend Claims Homelessness in Legal Fee Dispute

A former friend of Will Smith is requesting relief from a substantial legal judgment, claiming financial hardship and homelessness prevent him from paying court-ordered attorney's fees to Jada Pinkett Smith.

According to court documents obtained by TMZ, Bilaal Salaam has petitioned the court to reconsider a decision ordering him to pay Jada Pinkett Smith more than $32,000 in attorney's fees. The fees were awarded after Pinkett Smith successfully convinced the court to dismiss Salaam's claims of emotional distress against her.

In his filing, Salaam describes himself as "certified homeless" and states that he receives welfare benefits, rendering him unable to satisfy the judgment. While acknowledging that he owes Pinkett Smith legal fees, Salaam has requested either a significant reduction in the amount or the establishment of a payment plan that accommodates his current circumstances.

The legal dispute originated from a lawsuit Salaam filed against Pinkett Smith, in which he alleged that she directed friends to threaten him. According to the complaint, these alleged threats occurred after Salaam refused to assist Will Smith in managing the fallout from the widely publicized incident at the Oscars, during which Smith slapped comedian Chris Rock on stage.

Pinkett Smith has denied all allegations of wrongdoing throughout the legal proceedings. The court ultimately sided with her position, dismissing Salaam's emotional distress claims and ordering him to cover her legal expenses incurred in defending against the lawsuit.

The case highlights the potential financial consequences faced by plaintiffs in unsuccessful civil litigation, particularly when defendants prevail and seek recovery of their legal costs. Courts typically have discretion in determining whether to grant relief from such judgments based on demonstrated financial hardship, though the outcome of Salaam's reconsideration request remains pending.
