Wildwood Police Shut Down Pop-Up Party Before It Started

Our community's Memorial Day weekend remained safe and family-friendly thanks to proactive police work that stopped a pop-up party before it could begin. Wildwood Police identified and shut down a social media-promoted gathering at a short-term rental on West Montgomery Avenue, demonstrating the effectiveness of increased enforcement measures across the city.

The incident unfolded Saturday afternoon when officers arrived at a property that had been booked for six people but was already housing at least 15 individuals. Neighbor Nick Decinque witnessed the intervention firsthand: "There were 5 cops on the porch, and they seemed like they were arguing with the people inside, and the next thing I knew, they were coming in and out, packing their cars up."

Property owner Christian Cruz told reporters he was completely unaware of the party plans until police contacted him. The event had been advertised across multiple social media platforms including Instagram, Facebook, and Snapchat. "I called Airbnb and cancelled their reservation, that's it. I don't want them to be there in my house," Cruz said when reached by phone Monday.

The location choice raised eyebrows among local residents. The rental property sits just steps from the police department itself. "To pick this street is kind of ridiculous. Someone didn't do their homework, apparently," said neighbor Shannon McGill.

This successful intervention was part of a comprehensive safety strategy Wildwood implemented for the holiday weekend. The city deployed multiple enforcement measures including a 10 p.m. juvenile curfew, an 8 p.m. backpack ban, and increased patrols along the boardwalk. Mounted officers on horseback provided both a visible deterrent and a family-friendly presence throughout the weekend.

Deputy Mayor and Public Safety Commissioner Steve Mikulski praised the collaborative effort in a statement released following the weekend. "Overall, Memorial Day weekend in the City of Wildwood went very well from a public safety standpoint," Mikulski said. "We had tremendous cooperation between all of our agencies, including the Wildwood Police Department, Wildwood Fire Department, EMS, Beach Patrol, Cape May County Sheriff's Office, and the New Jersey State Police."

The enhanced law enforcement presence proved particularly valuable given the crowds that turned out despite gray and gloomy weather conditions. Officials credited the additional resources from local, county, and state partners with helping manage crowds and address potential issues before they could escalate.

"Mounted patrol units on horseback were a tremendous asset and helped create a very family-friendly atmosphere while also assisting with crowd management and public interaction," Mikulski noted. "Despite some challenging weather at times, families were out enjoying the boardwalk, restaurants, amusement piers, and beaches safely."

Looking ahead to the summer season, police announced they will continue monitoring social media platforms for similar unauthorized events. They're asking community members to report any concerning postings they encounter. Officials are also urging short-term rental owners to exercise greater vigilance when screening potential guests.

The successful weekend reflects our community's commitment to maintaining Wildwood as a safe, welcoming destination for families. As Mikulski emphasized: "Our goal every holiday weekend is to make sure residents and visitors feel safe and comfortable bringing their families to Wildwood, and I believe we accomplished that."
