Wildwood Man Gets 18 Years for Shooting International Worker

Our community witnessed both tragedy and resilience when a senseless act of violence nearly claimed the life of a young international worker in the summer of 2024. This week, justice was served as the man responsible learned his fate in Cape May County Superior Court.

On Wednesday, William Hoyle, a 42-year-old Wildwood resident, received an 18-year prison sentence after being convicted of first-degree attempted murder. His victim was a 20-year-old woman from Lithuania who had come to New Jersey on a student visa to work at Morey's Piers during the summer season.

The shooting occurred around 10:30 p.m. on July 9, 2024, near the intersection of Pacific Avenue outside Cattle 'n Clover Irish Pub & Steak House in Wildwood. Responding officers found the young woman suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. According to Cape May County Prosecutor Jeffrey Sutherland, she was completely innocent — an unintended victim caught in violence not meant for her.

After the shooting, Hoyle fled the scene. Police quickly obtained a warrant for his arrest, and two days later, he surrendered to authorities in Camden County.

What happened next showed the best of our community. As the victim fought for her life in critical condition, neighbors, tourists, and strangers came together to support her recovery. A GoFundMe campaign titled "Support Vilte's Journey to Recovery" raised more than $81,000, helping her family travel from Lithuania to be by her side during those difficult weeks.

Against the odds, the young woman survived her devastating injuries. Her recovery stands as a testament to both medical care and the power of community support during our darkest moments.

The 18-year sentence handed down to Hoyle reflects the severity of his actions and the lasting impact of gun violence on innocent lives. For a young woman who came to our shores seeking summer work and new experiences, that July night changed everything. Our community's response, however, reminded us that even in tragedy, we stand together.
