Wallaby Escapes Cape May Zoo, Search Underway

Our community is on the lookout for an unexpected visitor this week after a wallaby made a daring escape from the Cape May County Zoo on Tuesday morning.

The bouncing marsupial managed to hop out of its habitat, setting off a coordinated search effort involving multiple agencies. The Cape May County Sheriff's Office is working alongside personnel from the Cape May County Park/Zoo and local police departments to locate the adventurous animal.

Search crews are concentrating their efforts in the Cape May Court House section of Middle Township, where officials believe the wallaby may be exploring its newfound freedom. The area's mix of residential neighborhoods and open spaces provides plenty of territory for the escape artist to cover.

While wallabies may look adorable, authorities are urging residents to exercise caution if they encounter the animal. The Cape May County Sheriff's Office posted clear instructions on Facebook for anyone who spots the wayward marsupial.

"If you happen to encounter it, please do not approach, give the animal space and dial 911," the Sheriff's Office said on Facebook.

The warning makes sense when you consider that wallabies, though smaller than their kangaroo cousins, can still deliver powerful kicks when frightened or cornered. These Australian natives can also move surprisingly fast, capable of hopping at speeds up to 30 miles per hour when motivated.

The Sheriff's Office has promised to release additional information about the wallaby as it becomes available, which may help residents identify the specific animal and understand its temperament better.

For now, Middle Township residents are asked to keep their eyes open and their distance respectful. If you spot what appears to be a small kangaroo-like creature hopping through your neighborhood, remember: admire from afar and let the professionals handle the reunion.
