Vineland Father's Death Involved Meth, Heart Disease

A Cumberland County homicide case has taken a complex turn as new medical details surface about a father who died while defending his daughter. Louis "Gus" Serbeck, 54, of Millville, had methamphetamine in his system and pre-existing heart disease that may have contributed to his death, according to testimony from a recent court hearing.

Jacob Hannah, 18, and Eric D. Hannah, 56, face serious charges in connection with Serbeck's death following a violent confrontation in April 2025. The incident began when Jacob Hannah, then 17 years old, allegedly assaulted Serbeck's daughter at the Hannah home in Vineland on April 20, 2025.

The following day, Serbeck and his daughter went to the Hannah residence to discuss what had happened. What was meant to be a conversation quickly escalated into a deadly confrontation. According to authorities, Jacob Hannah struck Serbeck multiple times in the head with a metal baseball bat, while Eric Hannah hit him in the back of the head with a flashlight.

During an April hearing, Superior Court Judge William Ziegler characterized the case as a homicide, noting that Serbeck suffered blunt force head trauma. However, the judge also revealed that drugs and heart issues "probably contributed to the death." An autopsy later confirmed that heart disease did play a role in Serbeck's death, prosecutors stated at the hearing.

Serbeck was initially transported to a nearby hospital with plans to airlift him to Cooper University Hospital, but he died while en route.

Both Jacob Hannah, who is being tried as an adult, and Eric Hannah have been indicted on charges of aggravated manslaughter, aggravated assault, conspiracy to commit aggravated assault, and weapons charges. The pair are scheduled to appear in court again on June 15.

The revelation about Serbeck's methamphetamine use and underlying health conditions adds layers of complexity to what was already a tragic case. While these factors may have contributed to his death, authorities maintain that the violent assault was the primary cause of the fatal outcome.
