A terrifying situation for one local family ended with relief early Tuesday morning when two children were found safe after the vehicle they were sitting in was stolen from a Bridgeton convenience store.
Officers responded to the Wawa at 101 E. Broad St. at approximately 1:20 a.m. following a report of motor vehicle theft, according to Bridgeton police. The incident unfolded when a driver briefly stepped inside the store, leaving her two children in the vehicle.
When the mother returned just moments later, her vehicle—with her children still inside—had vanished from the parking lot. The discovery sparked an immediate police response and search effort that fortunately concluded quickly.
Police were able to recover the stolen vehicle shortly after the initial report. Most importantly, both children were still inside and completely unharmed. However, the suspect responsible for taking the vehicle had already fled the scene before officers arrived.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of vehicle safety, particularly during quick stops. While our community is grateful this situation ended without harm to the children, it highlights how quickly circumstances can change.
Bridgeton police are actively investigating and seeking information from anyone who may have witnessed the theft or has details about the suspect. Community members with information are urged to contact Bridgeton police at 856-451-0033.
The swift recovery of the vehicle and children demonstrates the effectiveness of our local law enforcement's rapid response, though the search for the individual responsible continues.
