Our community witnessed an impressive display of interagency cooperation this week as Absecon Police, working alongside specialized dive teams, successfully recovered a long-submerged vehicle from the waters near Faunce Landing Boat Ramp.
The recovery operation came together after Absecon Police officers attended a training seminar earlier this year with the Northeast Public Safety Divers and Underwater Forensics & Educational Foundation. During that seminar, officers learned about the group's specialized capabilities in locating and recovering submerged vehicles—knowledge that would soon prove invaluable.
When police learned of a vehicle likely submerged near the Faunce Landing Boat Ramp, they reached out to their new contacts, who volunteered their expertise to assist with the recovery effort. The collaboration demonstrates how building professional relationships and networks can directly benefit our community when challenges arise.
The dive team's efficiency was remarkable. According to Absecon Police, it didn't take long for the experts to search and locate the car, which was positioned approximately 200 feet from the boat ramp. The vehicle turned out to be a Nissan Sentra manufactured in the early 1990s, meaning it had potentially been underwater for decades.
The recovery process itself presented significant challenges. With assistance from City Wide Towing, crews worked to bring parts of the vehicle to shore. Years of exposure to salt water had severely corroded the car, making the extraction delicate and difficult work. The condition of the vehicle speaks to just how long it may have been resting beneath the surface.
Now comes the investigative phase. Absecon Police say they'll work to determine how and why the vehicle ended up in the water in the first place. Was it an accident? Was the car abandoned? These are questions investigators will now pursue. Anyone with relevant information about the submerged Nissan Sentra is urged to contact Absecon Police.
The successful recovery required coordination among multiple agencies and organizations. Absecon Police expressed gratitude to all parties involved in the effort: City Wide Towing, the Northeast Public Safety Divers, and the US Coast Guard. It's this kind of teamwork that keeps our waterways safe and helps solve mysteries that might otherwise remain hidden beneath the waves.
The Faunce Landing Boat Ramp serves as a popular access point for boaters and anglers in our area, making the recovery of the submerged vehicle an important step in maintaining the safety and integrity of this community resource.
