Our community has plenty to sing about this week as six Washington Township High School students earned spots in the highly competitive New Jersey All-State Choruses for the 2026-'27 school year. The talented vocalists successfully auditioned alongside high-school students from across the state, demonstrating the exceptional caliber of our local music program.
Four students—Savannah Cox, Luciana DiVenti, Joy Umeh, and Courtney Waddington—will take the stage with the All-State Mixed Chorus this November during the New Jersey Education Association Teacher Convention in Atlantic City. Meanwhile, Sonya Tereshko and Meddie Tuckey will showcase their talents in the All-State Treble Chorus next February at the New Jersey Music Educators Association Conference, also held in Atlantic City.
The recognition doesn't stop there. Both ensembles will deliver a second performance at the prestigious New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark, giving these young artists the opportunity to perform on one of the state's premier stages.
School choir director Amy Flynn expressed her pride in the students' achievements. "It is always an honor to see our students not only auditioning for region and state music ensembles, but also for so many of our students to be accepted," Flynn said. "It creates a deep sense of pride in our school and our music department."
The All-State Chorus selection process is notoriously rigorous, with students competing against the best vocal talent from high schools throughout New Jersey. Acceptance into these elite ensembles reflects not only individual dedication and skill, but also the strength of Washington Township's music education program.
For these six students, the coming months will bring intensive rehearsals and the chance to collaborate with fellow musicians from across the state, all while representing our community on some of New Jersey's most distinguished stages. It's a testament to the power of arts education and the exceptional talent we're nurturing right here in Washington Township.
