Ryan Lochte Takes Missouri Coaching Job Amid Custody Concerns

Olympic swimmer Ryan Lochte's recent announcement of a coaching position at Missouri State University has become a point of contention with his estranged wife, Kayla Reid Lochte, who has expressed concerns about the arrangement's impact on their three young children.

The decorated athlete's new role will place him approximately 15 hours away from Gainesville, Florida, where the children will remain with their mother. This geographic separation has raised questions about parenting arrangements and the children's emotional well-being during an already difficult family transition.

Sources close to Kayla Reid told TMZ that her primary concern centers on the emotional stability of the children. The sources emphasized that it is heartbreaking when young children face the reality of seeing a parent less frequently, particularly at an age when they cannot fully comprehend distance or what a long-distance parenting schedule truly means in the long term.

Ryan Lochte addressed the distance issue directly, stating, "I will be back every single month to see my kids." He added that he plans to visit during breaks, holidays, and summers to maintain his relationship with his children despite the physical separation.

According to sources, the children have been informed about their father's relocation, but given their young ages, they do not yet fully grasp what seeing a parent one weekend per month or primarily during summers and holidays will realistically entail. This developmental reality adds another layer of complexity to an already challenging family situation.

Kayla Reid Lochte has no plans to relocate to Missouri with the children. Sources indicate this decision stems primarily from the fact that the children are already established in Gainesville and integrated into the school system there. Uprooting them would create additional disruption during an already tumultuous period.

Ryan Lochte provided his perspective on the decision to leave Gainesville, stating bluntly, "Gainesville hates me." He elaborated that both he and his current girlfriend, Molly Gillihan, face what he describes as constant bullying and harassment on a daily basis, which he attributes to his ex-wife. He characterized the environment as one where they are "shunned" from the community.

The swimmer described the past year as exhausting. Kayla Reid filed for divorce in June, and Ryan Lochte claims that Molly Gillihan lost her employment after individuals allegedly associated with Kayla Reid and her friends contacted her workplace with claims that she was sleeping with a married man. Ryan Lochte has denied beginning a relationship with Gillihan before the divorce proceedings commenced.

In an effort to bring the children with him to Missouri, Ryan Lochte says he offered Kayla Reid the family home in Gainesville, everything in it, and $25,000 in exchange for allowing the children to relocate with him. The offer appears not to have been accepted, as the children will remain in Florida.

Ryan Lochte explained that living in Gainesville was "no longer healthy or feasible" for him, and he now feels the healthiest and strongest he has ever been in his life with Molly Gillihan rather than with Kayla Reid. He emphasized his commitment to his children despite the distance, stating he will spend his entire paycheck from his coaching job to see his kids and spend time with them.

"I have to start this coaching job to be where I need to be for them. I love them. And I pray one day they see this truly was all for them," Ryan Lochte stated. "I plan to just go up from here in the coaching world and I could not do that while in Gainesville."

For her part, sources close to Kayla Reid indicate she has no interest in publicly tearing down Ryan Lochte and genuinely wants everyone involved to heal and move forward in a healthy manner. The sources describe her approach as one focused on grace and maturity, prioritizing respectful coparenting and keeping the children's needs first rather than creating additional public conflict.

The situation highlights the complex challenges facing families navigating divorce, career opportunities, and custody arrangements when geographic distance becomes a factor. As Ryan Lochte embarks on this new chapter in his coaching career at Missouri State University, the practical realities of maintaining meaningful parental relationships across state lines will test both parents' commitment to their children's well-being.
