Reality TV Personality Faces New Lawsuit Over Unpaid Rent

A luxury apartment building has filed a civil lawsuit against Mia Thornton, alleging the former reality television star failed to pay rent for the month of March. According to court documents filed on March 18, Thornton allegedly owes $2,859 in past due rent, with additional fees bringing the total amount to nearly $3,500.

The 41-year-old television personality, known for her appearances on The Real Housewives of Potomac, now faces this civil action amid ongoing criminal proceedings. Representatives for Thornton have not yet responded to requests for comment regarding the lawsuit.

This latest legal challenge emerges four months after Thornton was arrested on felony theft charges. Law enforcement officials accused her of stealing more than $11,000 worth of furniture and electronics from a rental condominium in Atlanta. The alleged stolen items included radios, televisions, DVD players, and other household goods, according to police reports. Thornton was subsequently taken into custody without incident and transported to the Fulton County Jail for processing.

Body camera footage from the arrest captured Thornton acknowledging that she was aware a warrant had been issued for her apprehension. The footage showed the reality television figure in an emotional state during the encounter with law enforcement.

Prior to her arrest, Encore Management filed an eviction lawsuit against Thornton for a separate Atlanta property. That complaint alleged she rented a three-bedroom, three-bathroom unit spanning 2,011 square feet but failed to pay rent. The management company sought eviction and demanded payment of $5,100 in past due rent for September, plus $6,085 for each subsequent month she remained in the unit.

Following the emergence of her legal troubles, Thornton addressed the situation through social media. In a statement posted to Instagram, she wrote, "This new year is about rebuilding, refining and rising with purpose. I am grateful for the clarity that comes through adversity, and I am committed to moving forward with integrity and grace."

In a subsequent post, Thornton emphasized themes of personal growth and resilience. "This past week reminded me of the importance of staying grounded, especially when life feels loud," she stated. "I am stepping into another year with clarity, accountability and gratitude. Challenges do not define me — how I rebuild does."

Thornton gained public recognition through her four-season tenure on The Real Housewives of Potomac, a Bravo network reality series. She departed the show ahead of its tenth season, citing her family's relocation to Atlanta as the reason for her exit.

In her departure announcement posted to Instagram in April 2025, Thornton expressed gratitude for her time on the program. "The past four seasons have been an unforgettable journey, one filled with growth, lessons, and so many incredible memories," she wrote. "I want to thank Truly Original, Bravo, NBCUniversal and Andy Cohen for believing in me and giving me the space to share my story."

The civil lawsuit for unpaid rent represents the latest development in what has become a series of legal and financial challenges for the former reality television personality. The outcome of both the civil proceedings and the criminal case remains pending.
