Ocean City's Weekend Lineup: Block Party, Martin Z. Mollusk

Ocean City is rolling out the welcome mat this weekend with a trio of community events designed to usher in the pre-summer season. Whether you're looking for handcrafted treasures, a quirky local tradition, or wellness activities for the whole family, our town has something special planned.

Spring Block Party Takes Over Downtown Saturday

The highlight of the weekend arrives Saturday, May 2, when the Spring Block Party transforms downtown Asbury Avenue into a bustling marketplace from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. More than 350 crafters, food vendors and entertainers will line Asbury Avenue between Fifth Street and 14th Street, drawing tens of thousands of visitors to our community for what's become an annual tradition.

Live entertainment kicks off at 11 a.m. and runs through 4 p.m., with performances scheduled at multiple locations along the avenue. Music lovers can catch the Robert Boney Band at 7th Street, the Pennsport String Band at 13th Street, and Big Daddy at 14th Street. In an exciting addition this year, the Ocean City Pops and Ocean City Theatre Company will alternate performances at 9th Street, showcasing our community's rich artistic talent.

Families with young children won't want to miss the pony rides available from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Ocean City Tabernacle grounds at Sixth Street and Asbury Avenue—a perennial favorite that brings smiles to kids year after year.

Martin Z. Mollusk Predicts Early Summer Today

The weekend festivities actually begin today, Friday, May 1, with one of Ocean City's most beloved quirky traditions. Martin Z. Mollusk Day takes place at 11 a.m. on the beach at Ninth Street, where our town's hermit-crab mascot will check for his shadow as a sign of an early summer.

This charming tradition dates back to 1974, when Ocean City Public Relations Director Mark Soifer created the promotion declaring that if Martin sees his shadow, summer will come a week early to Ocean City. According to the announcement, Friday's event will mark the 53rd time Martin has delivered good news to our community.

Meteorologist "Nor'easter" Nick Pittman will serve as special guest host, while the String Band Novelties provide musical entertainment. It's a lighthearted celebration that perfectly captures Ocean City's unique character and our community's enthusiasm for the approaching summer season.

Community Wellness Day Focuses on Health Sunday

Rounding out the weekend, Community Wellness Day takes place Sunday, May 3, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Ocean City Free Public Library. The event opens with a keynote address from 11 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. delivered by John-Edward Heath, a Marine veteran and adaptive athlete whose story promises to inspire.

Beginning at 1 p.m., attendees can participate in yoga sessions, enjoy live music, experience a Reiki demonstration, and take advantage of blood-pressure screenings. The event will also feature healthy snacks and tastings, along with important discussions on mental health—resources that benefit our entire community.

Discount Days and Free Parking Sweetens the Deal

Adding to the weekend's appeal, Discount Days run Saturday and Sunday, with downtown and boardwalk merchants offering discounted merchandise in stores and at table sales between Sixth Street and 14th Street on the boardwalk and Asbury Avenue.

Perhaps best of all, street parking will be free at all metered spots and downtown parking lots throughout the weekend, including the Transportation Center lot at Ninth Street and Haven Avenue and the municipal lots on the 700 and 800 blocks of Central Avenue. More information on parking is available at ocnj.us/parking.

With perfect timing as we transition into the warmer months, this weekend offers our community and visitors alike a chance to celebrate everything that makes Ocean City special—from quirky traditions to artistic performances, wellness initiatives to simple seaside fun.
