Music Executive John McClain Dies at 71

John McClain, the co-executor of Michael Jackson's estate and a veteran music executive and producer, has died at the age of 71, according to a representative for McClain.

McClain died on Tuesday, his representative confirmed. Sources with direct knowledge indicate he had been sick for several years, though it remains unclear whether that illness contributed to his death. He passed away in Malibu.

The music industry veteran wore many hats throughout his distinguished career. In addition to his role as co-executor of the Michael Jackson estate alongside John Branca, McClain produced hits for an impressive roster of artists including Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson, Ice Cube, and Dr. Dre. His influence extended across multiple genres and generations of popular music.

McClain served as an A&R executive at A&M Records, where he demonstrated a keen eye for talent and commercial potential. He not only oversaw Janet Jackson's breakthrough album, "Control," but also urged the label to sign new acts like Mark Wahlberg's Marky Mark & The Funky Bunch, showcasing his ability to identify emerging trends in popular music.

McClain and Branca were appointed co-executors of the Michael Jackson estate in 2009, following the pop icon's death. The duo faced the daunting task of managing an estate burdened by heavy debt. Through strategic management and creative vision, they not only eliminated the debt but transformed the estate into a massively lucrative empire, reportedly worth billions of dollars.

Under their leadership, the estate spearheaded numerous high-profile projects that kept Michael Jackson's legacy alive and profitable. These initiatives included the "Michael" biopic, a Broadway musical, a Cirque du Soleil production, and the film "This Is It," which documented Michael Jackson's preparation for his final ill-fated tour.

McClain personally contributed to the production of Michael Jackson's posthumous hits, including "Love Never Felt So Good" and "Much Too Soon," ensuring that new material continued to reach fans even after the artist's death.

His death marks the loss of a significant figure in the music industry whose influence extended from artist development and production to estate management and legacy preservation. McClain's career spanned decades and touched some of the most important artists and projects in contemporary popular music.
