A Minotola man is facing sentencing next month after pleading guilty to serious charges stemming from two separate incidents that shook our community last year.
Jeffrey Phillips, 37, of Minotola, NJ, entered his guilty plea on Tuesday to charges of assault on a law-enforcement officer and leaving the scene of an accident. The charges relate to incidents that occurred in Hammonton and Buena Vista Township during 2025.
The assault charge stems from a confrontation at the Hammonton Train Station on August 7, 2025. According to officials, Phillips was spotted by Hammonton Police Department officers near an e-bike he was accused of attempting to steal. When officers moved to stop him, Phillips attempted to flee.
During the arrest that followed, officials said Phillips spat on and injured at least one officer—a disturbing escalation that transformed what began as a theft investigation into a violent encounter with law enforcement.
The second incident occurred roughly two months later on September 30, 2025, in the area of U.S. Highway 40 and Tuckahoe Road in Buena Vista Township. Police said Phillips was involved in a crash but initially fled the scene. He later returned and approached officers who were investigating the collision, admitting he had been behind the wheel of the vehicle that fled earlier.
These incidents highlight the challenges our local law enforcement officers face daily while protecting our community. Assaults on police officers are taken seriously in New Jersey, as they should be—these men and women put themselves at risk to keep us safe.
Phillips is scheduled to appear for sentencing on June 23, 2026. The outcome of that hearing will determine what consequences he faces for his admitted actions in both Hammonton and Buena Vista Township.
