Mika Abdalla, the breakout star of Prime Video's Off Campus, and Jake Short have ended their engagement, according to a representative for the actress.
"Due to recent interest in Mika's personal life it would feel remiss to not address that her and Jake are no longer together," a representative for Abdalla told Us Weekly. "They continue to support each other and remain on friendly terms, and kindly ask for privacy and respect."
The relationship between Abdalla and Short began in 2021 when they met on the set of Sex Appeal. After four years together, the couple confirmed their engagement through social media earlier this year. The announcement of their split comes as Abdalla experiences significant professional success with her role in the popular streaming series.
Abdalla currently portrays Allie in Off Campus, a series adaptation of Elle Kennedy's novel The Score. Following the show's successful first season premiere, production is currently underway for the second season, which will center on the romantic relationship between Abdalla's character Allie and Dean, portrayed by Stephen Kalyn.
Despite the personal development, Abdalla remains focused on her professional commitments. In May, she discussed the upcoming season's direction with Us Weekly, expressing enthusiasm about the storytelling approach.
"Even though we do tease Dean and Allie a lot earlier than people expect, you are still left wanting a lot more," Abdalla told Us Weekly. "And that's something I'm really excited about. You just want to see more."
The actress elaborated on the creative decisions behind expanding Allie and Dean's storyline throughout the first season, noting the interconnected nature of the source material. The production team chose to incorporate elements from multiple books in the series to maintain narrative cohesion, particularly given the close relationship between Allie's story and that of another character, Hannah.
"Allie and Hannah's story lines are so connected to one another that it just made a lot of sense to touch on that this season," she explained. "All the books, they build off of each other and they're all connected. It didn't really make sense to not include certain elements from the other books in this season."
Looking toward the second season, Abdalla expressed particular interest in exploring the psychological depth of her character and the complexities beneath the surface-level personas both Allie and Dean present to the world.
"I'm just really looking forward to digging deeper into who Allie and Dean are. They both kind of have these fronts, these personas that are hard to kind of crack through. They are kind of stereotypes of themselves, if that makes sense," she told Us Weekly. "But in the books, there's so much beneath the surface of Dean and there's so much beneath the surface of Allie."
The actress continued, noting her anticipation for the emotional depth the upcoming season will explore. "When it is time for our season, I'm excited to dig emotionally into that a little bit more. [We] see Allie and Dean as their exteriors a lot in season 1. And while that is fun, and they are super fun characters to play, I think as actors, selfishly, both of us are really excited to like, get psychological."
Neither Abdalla nor Short has made additional public statements regarding the end of their engagement beyond the representative's announcement requesting privacy during this transition.
