More than two decades after tragedy struck the set of the family sitcom 8 Simple Rules, Jason Ritter maintains a profound connection with the actors who worked alongside his late father, John Ritter. The bond, forged through shared grief and lasting affection, continues to bring the extended television family together.
In a recent interview, the 46-year-old Matlock star revealed the depth of these ongoing relationships. "I see them all the time," Jason Ritter explained, noting that the former cast members remain actively supportive of The John Ritter Foundation for Aortic Health, established by his stepmother Amy Yasbeck.
The foundation addresses the medical condition that claimed John Ritter's life in 2003. While rehearsing on the 8 Simple Rules set that year, the beloved actor suddenly experienced heart attack-like symptoms. He was transported to a nearby hospital, where physicians diagnosed an aortic dissection—a tear in the inner layer of the body's main artery. Despite emergency surgery, John Ritter was pronounced dead hours later at age 54.
The production halted briefly following the tragedy. Network executives and producers ultimately decided to write the character Paul Hennessy out of the series. In an episode titled "Goodbye" that aired later in 2003, Paul's wife Cate, portrayed by Katey Sagal, received devastating news that her husband had collapsed and died in a grocery store, leaving her and their three teenage children to navigate their loss.
For Jason Ritter, the experience created an unusual kinship with the young actors who played his father's television children. "In some weird way, especially with Kaley, Amy and Martin, it almost feels like we all lost the same dad at the same time," he reflected. "He was such a wonderful set dad to them. They clearly love him so much, and so do we. It kind of bonded us forever in a way."
The actors Jason Ritter referenced—Kaley Cuoco, Amy Davidson, and Martin Spanjers—portrayed the Hennessy children Bridget, Kerry, and Rory respectively. He also praised Katey Sagal, describing her as "so lovely and wonderful."
Despite the current popularity of television reboots and revivals, Jason Ritter acknowledged he has "never talked" to the 8 Simple Rules cast about staging a reunion. While expressing interest as a viewer, he questioned whether such a project might prove emotionally challenging. "As a fan, I would love to see that," he said, before adding, "Would it be too sad and strange?"
When the interviewer suggested that Cuoco, Davidson, Spanjers, and Sagal could instead appear on Matlock, Jason Ritter responded positively. "That would be amazing! I would like to see all four of those people on Matlock," he said with a smile.
The enduring relationships demonstrate how professional collaborations can evolve into genuine family bonds, particularly when tested by profound loss. Through their continued support of The John Ritter Foundation for Aortic Health and their maintained connections with one another, the 8 Simple Rules family honors the memory of the actor who brought them together while working to prevent similar tragedies for others.
