When the final school bell rings this June, thousands of children in our community will lose access to the nutritious meals they depend on during the school year. But there's a way we can help—and local organizations are being called to step up.
The New Jersey Department of Agriculture is actively recruiting sponsors for the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP), a vital initiative that ensures children from low-income families continue to receive healthy meals throughout the summer months. It's a program that made an enormous difference last year, delivering more than 4.4 million meals to young people across the Garden State.
How the Program Works
The Summer Food Service Program operates on a straightforward but powerful premise: federally funded reimbursements go to approved sponsors who serve meals to children 18 and under in economically disadvantaged areas. This means organizations don't bear the financial burden alone—they receive support for every nutritious meal they provide to a child in need.
The beauty of this program lies in its flexibility and reach. Whether you're part of a school district, run a summer camp, coordinate youth sports programs, or lead a community nonprofit, your organization could be the bridge between a child and the nutrition they need to thrive during summer break.
Who Can Apply?
The program welcomes a diverse range of applicants, including:
Public and private nonprofit school food authorities
Local government agencies
Nonprofit community organizations
Residential summer camps
National youth sports programs
If your organization serves children in areas where families face economic challenges, you could be exactly what this program needs to expand its reach in our community.
Why This Matters to Our Community
Food insecurity doesn't take a summer vacation. When school cafeterias close for the season, many children lose access to the reliable, nutritious meals that fuel their growth, learning, and play. The Summer Food Service Program fills that critical gap, ensuring that no child in our community has to face hunger during what should be a carefree time of year.
The impact extends beyond full bellies. Well-nourished children are better prepared for physical activities, summer learning programs, and the adventures that make childhood memorable. By participating in SFSP, local organizations become champions for child wellness and community health.
Time to Act
Organizations interested in becoming sponsors need to move quickly—the application deadline is March 18. That gives potential sponsors just a few weeks to explore this opportunity and submit their applications.

Together, we can build on last year's success and ensure that every child in our community has access to the nutrition they need to enjoy a healthy, active summer. If your organization has the capacity to serve meals to children, this program offers both the resources and the support to make it happen.
