Our community is experiencing an official heat wave, with temperatures that shattered records and left residents seeking any available shade. Newark Liberty International Airport, Newark's climate site, recorded a scorching 99 degrees on Tuesday — not only setting a new temperature record for the day but also marking the third consecutive day of temperatures at or above 90 degrees.
The heat advisory remains in effect for one more day as we push through Wednesday, but relief is finally on the horizon. Unfortunately, overnight temperatures won't provide much respite, meaning Wednesday morning will feel nearly as oppressive as Tuesday afternoon. Air quality also remains a concern, adding another layer of discomfort for residents with respiratory sensitivities.
Storms to Break the Heat
Wednesday afternoon will see temperatures climb back into the 90s, but this time there's a silver lining. Thunderstorms are expected to develop in the afternoon hours, becoming more widespread by early evening. These storms will bring localized heavy rain and lightning, finally breaking the grip of this intense heat wave.
If you're planning to be outdoors Wednesday afternoon or evening, stay weather-aware and make sure you have shelter readily available. The combination of lightning and heavy downpours means you'll want to be prepared to head indoors quickly when storms approach.
Cooler Days Ahead
The dramatic temperature shift will be welcome news for heat-weary residents. By Wednesday night, temperatures will plunge into the 50s — a stark contrast to the oppressive heat we've endured. Rain will likely linger across parts of the state into Thursday as the system moves through.
The rest of the week looks much more comfortable, with highs settling into the 60s. However, those planning Memorial Day weekend activities should take note: rain is forecast to return Saturday and continue on and off through Memorial Day on Monday, May 25. It's not the ideal forecast for outdoor celebrations, but after this heat wave, many in our community will welcome the cooler, wetter pattern.
Stay tuned for updates as we track the holiday weekend forecast and monitor Wednesday's storm potential.
