Former NHL Star Ron Duguay Battles Stage 4 Cancer as Family Launches Fundraising Campaign

A former National Hockey League legend is confronting one of the most challenging battles of his life, and his family has turned to the public for support. Ron Duguay, who spent six seasons with the New York Rangers during his 12-year NHL career, is fighting Stage 4 colon cancer, a diagnosis he received approximately one year ago.

On Tuesday, February 24, Duguay's daughters, Shay Thomas and Amber Stavros, established a GoFundMe campaign to assist with the mounting costs associated with their father's medical care. The initiative was launched despite the former athlete's reluctance to seek financial assistance, according to statements posted on the fundraising page.

The Scope of the Medical Challenge

In an interview with Page Six, the 68-year-old Duguay disclosed that he has been managing Stage 4 cancer originating in the colon for the past year. The disease has necessitated a rigorous treatment schedule that requires him to travel from his residence in Florida to Orange County, California, every two weeks for ongoing medical interventions.

The decision to seek treatment in California was not made lightly. According to the GoFundMe description, Duguay's initial care in Florida proved inadequate and nearly resulted in a life-threatening situation. His daughters subsequently arranged for him to receive treatment near their homes in Orange County, where the quality of care has shown improvement.

Financial Burden of Cancer Treatment

The fundraising campaign, which has set a goal of $26,000, had garnered nearly $21,000 from 114 donors at the time of reporting. The funds are designated to cover a comprehensive range of expenses, including constant cross-country travel, conventional medical care, holistic therapies, nutritional supplements, and alternative healing approaches.

The family has indicated that Duguay's condition has shown recent concerning developments. The campaign description noted that his cancer markers have begun to rise again, prompting the exploration of additional treatment options beyond United States borders. These international treatment alternatives carry substantial costs, adding another layer of financial pressure during an already difficult period.

The disease has also impacted Duguay's ability to maintain his normal work schedule, further compounding the financial challenges. His daughters emphasized that their father has traditionally been self-reliant and reluctant to seek assistance, particularly regarding financial matters.

A Hockey Legacy Faces Personal Challenge

Duguay's professional hockey career spanned more than a decade in the NHL, with his most notable tenure being his time with the New York Rangers across two separate periods. His contributions to the sport have made him a recognizable figure in hockey circles, particularly among Rangers supporters.

In his statement to Page Six, Duguay acknowledged the difficulty of requesting financial support, noting that he typically occupies the role of helper rather than recipient. He described cancer as something that depletes one's vitality and characterized the associated costs as extraordinarily burdensome.

Despite these challenges, Duguay expressed determination to pursue a comprehensive treatment approach. He indicated his intention to combine alternative therapies with conventional Western medicine, and stated his desire to eventually share the knowledge gained from his experience to assist others facing similar battles.

Support System and Moving Forward

Duguay has been in a relationship with former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin since approximately 2022. The former athlete has occasionally featured Palin in his social media content over recent years, indicating a supportive personal relationship during this challenging period.

The GoFundMe campaign lists Duguay as a co-organizer, though his daughters clarified that the initiative was their decision following extensive family discussions about the best way to support their father through this health crisis. The campaign represents not only a financial lifeline but also a testament to the community support that often emerges when public figures face personal health challenges.

As Duguay continues his treatment regimen and explores additional therapeutic options, the fundraising effort underscores the substantial financial impact that serious illness can impose, even on individuals with established careers and public recognition.
