The family of a Houston couple found dead alongside their two young children in an apparent murder-suicide earlier this month has come forward to correct misinformation and provide clarity about the tragic incident.
Matthew Mitchell and his wife, Thy Mitchell, who owned two Houston restaurants, were discovered dead from gunshot wounds in their upscale Houston home along with their 8-year-old daughter Maya and 4-year-old son Max. The family is now breaking their silence to address false reports that have circulated since the discovery.
According to Thy's family, reports claiming she was pregnant at the time of her death are categorically false. The family emphasized that police never made such a statement, and the autopsy report did not indicate pregnancy. This clarification directly contradicts earlier media reports suggesting the wife was expecting a third child.
The family also stated there was no history of domestic abuse in the relationship, addressing speculation about what may have preceded the deaths.
The grim discovery came after police conducted a welfare check at the residence. According to the family, the children's babysitter initiated the chain of events that led to the welfare check after arriving at school to pick up Max and Maya and discovering they never arrived. When officers entered the home, they found the bodies of all four family members.
The family confirmed that no one entered the home before police arrived at the scene. They have cooperated fully with authorities, turning over all footage from security cameras mounted inside the residence to assist with the investigation.
Matthew and Thy Mitchell were the owners of two Houston dining establishments: Traveler's Table and Traveler's Cart. Despite the tragedy, the family announced that both restaurants will continue normal operations. This decision ensures that the businesses the couple built will remain part of the Houston culinary landscape.
Traveler's Table gained national recognition when it was featured on Guy Fieri's Food Network show, "Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives" in 2021. Matthew and Thy appeared on the program and posed for a photograph with the celebrity chef and television host.
The family's decision to speak out appears motivated by a desire to set the record straight regarding the circumstances of the deaths and to address inaccuracies that have appeared in various reports. By providing these clarifications, they aim to ensure that the public record accurately reflects what is known about this devastating incident.
