Diego Sanchez's Wife Files for Divorce Amid Legal Troubles

The personal life of former Ultimate Fighting Championship star Diego Sanchez has taken another difficult turn, as court documents reveal his wife filed for divorce earlier this year, just weeks before he received sentencing in a criminal case involving weapons charges.

Teresa Tapia filed a petition for divorce on February 16, 2026, citing "irreconcilable differences" and stating there was no possibility of reconciliation. The legal filing marked the end of a marriage that had lasted just over a year, with the couple having wed on December 20, 2024.

According to the settlement agreement reached between the parties, Sanchez and Tapia began living separately in April 2025, approximately four months into their marriage. The divorce proceedings revealed the couple had accumulated no joint property requiring division and carried no shared debt. Both parties waived their rights to spousal support, allowing for a clean financial separation.

In a statement provided to media outlets, Teresa Tapia offered insight into the circumstances surrounding the marriage's dissolution. "Diego had moved out of our home 6 months prior to our divorce - I was very patient and continued to try and help him through his problems ... I felt ... I had no choice but to end the marriage," Tapia explained. She added, "I wish Diego the best in life - I will always have love for him, and I will always continue to be a supporter of his. I hope one day he will realize who was actually there to help him."

Tapia also expressed continued affection for Sanchez's daughter, stating, "I will continue to love his daughter Deijah. I'm always a phone call away for her, she is such a blessing and deserves the world." Sanchez has not publicly responded to requests for comment regarding the divorce.

The divorce filing came during a particularly challenging period for the former mixed martial arts fighter. In March 2026, Sanchez was sentenced to five years of supervised probation and 800 hours of community service following criminal charges related to allegedly shooting at or from a motor vehicle and negligent use of a weapon. Prosecutors had requested prison time, but the court opted for the alternative sentencing structure.

The legal troubles represent a stark contrast to Sanchez's earlier career achievements. The fighter gained prominence in the UFC, where he built a reputation as a tenacious competitor. However, his post-fighting life has been marked by personal and legal challenges that have overshadowed his athletic accomplishments.

The timeline of events paints a picture of mounting difficulties: the couple separated in April 2025, Tapia filed for divorce in February 2026, and Sanchez received his criminal sentencing in March 2026. The convergence of personal relationship breakdown and serious legal consequences highlights the complex struggles facing the former athlete as he navigates life after professional competition.

As Sanchez begins his five-year probation period and works to complete his community service requirement, the dissolution of his marriage adds another layer of personal upheaval to an already difficult chapter in his life. The case serves as a reminder of the challenges many professional athletes face when transitioning away from their competitive careers, particularly when legal issues and relationship difficulties compound simultaneously.
