Our community's most vulnerable residents received critical protection earlier this month when the Cape May County Office of Emergency Management declared a Code Blue emergency for three consecutive nights from March 16 through 18.

The emergency declaration activated overnight warming centers from 6:00 pm to 6:00 am each night as a powerful storm system brought severe weather conditions to the region. The weather event featured intense thunderstorms with heavy rainfall transitioning to dangerously cold temperatures, with lows dropping to 26 degrees on Tuesday night and 30 degrees on Wednesday night.

Wind conditions posed an additional threat during the event, with gusts reaching up to 50 mph on the initial night before moderating to 25 mph gusts through the following evenings. The combination of plummeting temperatures and fierce winds created life-threatening conditions for anyone without adequate shelter.

Code Blue emergencies serve a vital purpose in our community—protecting individuals experiencing homelessness or living in poorly insulated settings who face serious risk of cold-related exposure and potential death. When temperatures drop to dangerous levels, these declarations ensure that warming centers open their doors and emergency resources mobilize to reach those in need.

During the emergency period, residents seeking temporary shelter were directed to contact their local municipality for warming center locations. The county also made additional support services available through the 2-1-1 helpline, which connects callers with emergency resources and assistance programs.

The March weather event highlighted the unpredictable nature of late winter conditions in our region, where severe storms can rapidly transition into freezing temperatures. While we've now moved past this particular cold snap, it serves as an important reminder of the emergency protocols that protect our neighbors when dangerous weather strikes.

Community members concerned about someone experiencing homelessness during extreme weather are encouraged to call 2-1-1 to connect them with resources. Additional information about Code Blue protocols and emergency preparedness is available on the Cape May County website at capemaycountynj.gov.
