When tragedy strikes unexpectedly, our community has a remarkable way of coming together. That's exactly what's happening in Manasquan, where neighbors, friends, and even strangers are rallying behind two sisters who recently lost their mother in the most heartbreaking of circumstances.
Melissa Conca, a devoted 51-year-old mother and Manasquan resident, passed away suddenly on February 17th from an undiagnosed heart condition. Her unexpected death has left daughters Ava and Sophie not only grieving the loss of someone they describe as their "beautiful best friend" but also facing significant financial uncertainty as they adjust to a new life with their grandparents.
A Daughter's Courage in the Face of Loss
In a testament to the strength her mother instilled in her, Ava Lamonica took the initiative to launch a GoFundMe campaign to help secure her and her sister's future. The response has been nothing short of extraordinary—as of this weekend, the campaign has raised over $93,000, demonstrating the profound impact Melissa had on those around her and our community's willingness to support children in need.
"Our lives changed forever when our mom passed away suddenly," Ava wrote in the campaign description. "She was our beautiful best friend, and an amazing role model with a courageous soul who loved us unconditionally."
The sisters now live with their grandparents, who are on a fixed income. The funds raised will help cover essential daily expenses—groceries, medical costs, sports equipment, school supplies, and transportation—as well as contribute to college savings, helping ensure the girls can pursue the futures their mother dreamed for them.
Remembering a Life Well-Lived
Melissa's life was one of dedication—to her daughters, her career, and her community. A Randolph native who graduated from George Mason University, she built an impressive career in human resources and recruiting. She served as a Senior Staffing Specialist at The New York Stock Exchange and held various senior HR positions at notable companies including Brooks Brothers, Teladoc, Grateful Giving, and reacHIRE.
But those who knew Melissa best remember her not for her professional accomplishments, but for the warmth she brought to everyday moments. She was the type of person who filled her home with the aroma of freshly baked goods for family and friends. She cherished simple pleasures—bike rides along our beautiful Jersey Shore beaches, the excitement of travel, and peaceful walks by the ocean.
Above all, Melissa was a devoted mother. Her daughters weren't just her children—they were the center of her world, the recipients of her unconditional love and the beneficiaries of her courageous spirit.
A Community's Embrace
Melissa is also survived by her parents, Frank and Carmella Ann Conca; her siblings Stephen and Allison, along with their spouses; and five nieces and nephews who will grow up hearing stories about their remarkable aunt.
The outpouring of support for Ava and Sophie reflects something special about our community—when one of our own faces unimaginable hardship, we don't look away. We step forward. We contribute what we can. We ensure that two young women who've lost their mother too soon won't have to face their future alone.
Every donation, whether large or small, represents more than financial support. It's a message to Ava and Sophie that their mother's love lives on—not just in their memories, but in the compassion of a community that refuses to let them navigate this difficult journey without help.
As these two young women work to rebuild their lives and plan for futures that will surely make their mother proud, they do so knowing they're surrounded by a community that cares. And in these difficult times, that makes all the difference.
