Comedian and social media personality Laura Clery is crediting first responders with saving her life after a harrowing domestic accident left her pinned beneath a 600-pound refrigerator earlier this week.
Clery documented the aftermath of the incident in a video posted from inside an ambulance, where she appeared wearing a neck brace. In characteristic humor despite the circumstances, she asked firefighters to confirm the details of what had transpired. The comedian later took to Instagram to express gratitude toward the emergency crew, describing them as "actual heroes" and specifically thanking the firefighters who reportedly broke through her garage door to access her and lift the massive appliance.
The accident occurred while Clery was home alone with her two children. According to her account, the refrigerator suddenly fell forward, slamming into her body and pinning her against the counter. The impact left her unable to move or breathe, creating a life-threatening situation that required immediate emergency response.
The severity of the moment was underscored by a message Clery sent to her ex-husband, Stephen Hilton, during the ordeal. The frantic text read, "I'm dying. Come by now now now," according to Hilton's revelation of the communication.
Clery has attributed the accident to improper installation, claiming the refrigerator had not been adequately mounted to the wall. She placed responsibility on contractor negligence for the faulty setup. The immediate trigger for the appliance's fall, she explained, was her seven-year-old son climbing on the refrigerator, which caused it to tip forward due to the inadequate mounting.
Despite the traumatic nature of the incident and the substantial weight of the appliance involved, Clery reported that she sustained no broken bones. She expressed relief and gratitude that her children emerged from the frightening situation unharmed, describing herself as "so lucky" given the potential for far worse outcomes.
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of proper appliance installation and the potential dangers posed by improperly secured heavy equipment in residential settings. Modern refrigerators, particularly larger models with features such as ice makers and water dispensers, can weigh between 300 and 800 pounds when fully loaded, making proper wall mounting a critical safety measure in homes with children.
