Body camera footage obtained from the Herriman City Police Department provides insight into the evidence collection process following a violent domestic altercation that occurred in February 2023. The footage, released on March 23, 2026, shows officers returning to a Utah residence approximately one week after responding to the initial incident.
According to the footage, two law enforcement officers visited the home on February 24, 2023, with specific instructions from prosecutors to confiscate a metal barstool that had been used during the altercation. Officers informed individuals present that they were collecting the item as a "weapon" for evidentiary purposes in the ongoing criminal case.
During the visit, which lasted approximately five minutes, officers also documented property damage resulting from the incident, including what appeared to be a dented wall. The body camera footage shows officers photographing the damage as part of their evidence collection protocol.
The incident in question involved Taylor Frankie Paul and Dakota Mortensen. Video evidence from the February 2023 altercation showed furniture being thrown during the confrontation. Particularly concerning to investigators was that at least one minor child was present in the home during the violent episode, reportedly sitting on nearby furniture as the incident unfolded.
The newly released body camera footage captures an emotional exchange between Paul and the responding officers. When Paul questioned whether the evidence collection constituted a serious matter, officers provided what appeared to be both reassurance and a warning. While acknowledging the situation did not involve a fatality, officers reportedly emphasized that the incident should serve as a catalyst for seeking assistance.
The case resulted in criminal charges against Paul, who subsequently entered a guilty plea to felony aggravated assault. As part of her sentence, Paul remains under probation supervision. The legal proceedings and public release of evidence from the case had significant professional consequences, leading to the cancellation of a television production in which she was scheduled to participate.
The release of this body camera footage underscores the meticulous evidence collection procedures law enforcement agencies employ in domestic violence investigations. Such cases often require officers to make multiple visits to crime scenes to ensure all relevant physical evidence is properly documented and preserved for prosecution.
Domestic violence cases involving weapons and occurring in the presence of children are treated with particular seriousness by prosecutors and courts. The presence of minors during violent altercations can result in enhanced charges and may influence sentencing considerations, as child welfare becomes a central concern in such proceedings.
