Betty Broderick, Convicted of Murdering Ex-Husband, Dies at 78

Betty Broderick, whose notorious double murder case captivated the nation for decades, has died at age 78, according to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.

Broderick was pronounced dead Friday morning, May 8, 2026, at an outside medical facility where she had been transported from the California Institution for Women prison in April. The attending physician determined she died from natural causes, though the San Bernardino County Coroner will make the official determination of cause of death.

Broderick was serving a 32-year-to-life sentence for the murders of Dan Broderick and Linda Broderick. The killings occurred in 1989, seven months after Dan and Linda married, following a bitter divorce that left Betty Broderick without custody of her four children.

A Marriage Unraveled

The case began in 1983 when Betty Broderick confronted her then-husband Dan, accusing him of having an affair with Linda, his 21-year-old assistant. Dan denied the allegations for two full years before ultimately moving out of the house and confessing to the affair.

The subsequent divorce proceedings were brutal, centered primarily on a custody battle over the couple's four children. Dan Broderick ultimately secured full custody, a loss that would prove devastating to Betty Broderick.

The Murders

In 1989, Betty Broderick stole a key from her daughter that opened the front door to Dan and Linda's house, and then shot and killed both of them. The premeditated nature of the crime was evident in the planning required to obtain access to their home.

Broderick was convicted and sentenced to two consecutive 15-year-to-life terms for the murders. She was also convicted of illegal use of a firearm. Over the years, she was denied parole three times and had been eligible for parole again in 2032.

Cultural Impact

The Betty Broderick case has been extensively documented in media over the decades. Her story was notably chronicled in the Netflix series "Dirty John: The Betty Broderick Story," which brought the case to a new generation of viewers unfamiliar with the original events.

The case remains significant in legal and cultural discussions about domestic violence, divorce proceedings, and the criminal justice system's handling of crimes of passion versus premeditated murder. Broderick's death closes a chapter on one of California's most infamous criminal cases, though the questions her case raised about marriage, custody, and justice continue to resonate.
