Our community is safer today thanks to the swift action of local law enforcement who prevented what prosecutors say could have been another tragic encounter between a predator and a child.
James Hadley, 66, of Barnegat, was taken into custody on Friday after allegedly traveling from Ocean County to Pleasantville with the intent to engage in sexual activity with a juvenile. Detectives from the Pleasantville Police Department and the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office arrested him at a predetermined location before he could meet with the child.
Hadley faces serious charges including second-degree sexual assault of a victim under 16, second-degree luring a minor to commit a sexual act, third-degree endangering the welfare of a child, and fourth-degree criminal sexual contact. These charges stem from at least three alleged incidents that occurred earlier this month.
Previous Alleged Encounters
The investigation revealed disturbing details about prior contact between Hadley and the victim. According to the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office, Hadley had allegedly met with the child on at least two previous occasions to engage in sex acts, paying the child to perform them.
This pattern of alleged behavior underscores the importance of vigilant law enforcement and community awareness when it comes to protecting our most vulnerable residents.
What Happens Next
The Prosecutor's Office has filed a motion for pre-trial detention, with a hearing tentatively scheduled for this week. This motion seeks to keep Hadley in custody while the case proceeds through the court system.
The case remains under active investigation. Anyone with information that could assist investigators is urged to contact the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office at (609) 909-7800.
Protecting Our Children
Cases like this serve as a sobering reminder that child predators can operate in any community. Parents and guardians should maintain open communication with children about online safety, appropriate adult behavior, and the importance of reporting uncomfortable situations immediately.
The collaborative effort between Pleasantville Police and the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office demonstrates the dedication of our local law enforcement to protecting children. Their proactive intervention in this case potentially prevented further harm.
As this case moves forward, it's important to remember that charges are accusations, and all individuals are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. However, the allegations serve as a critical reminder for our community to remain vigilant and prioritize child safety.
