ABC has announced an interim programming solution following the sudden cancellation of the upcoming season of The Bachelorette, turning to one of its established franchises to maintain its Sunday evening schedule.

According to network sources, a rerun of American Idol will occupy the time slot on March 22. However, this arrangement represents only a temporary measure, as network executives continue deliberations regarding a permanent replacement for the canceled season's remaining scheduled airtime.

The cancellation stems from recently surfaced video footage from 2023 showing Taylor Frankie Paul, the planned star of the season, in a physical altercation with Dakota Mortensen. The decision to halt production came mere hours after the video's public release.

Compounding the network's concerns, Paul faces a new domestic violence allegation related to a February incident involving Mortensen. Paul has disputed this characterization, asserting that Mortensen initiated the violence during the encounter.

A Disney Entertainment spokesperson addressed the situation directly: "In light of the newly released video just surfaced today, we have made the decision to not move forward with the new season of The Bachelorette at this time, and our focus is on supporting the family."

The programming cancellation represents a significant financial setback for the network. Industry sources indicate that internal discussions regarding liability and financial responsibility for the substantial losses have already commenced among network stakeholders.

American Idol typically broadcasts new episodes on Monday evenings. The Sunday rerun provides viewers with additional content from the singing competition franchise while network executives develop a comprehensive strategy for the vacant time slot.

The situation highlights the challenges networks face when controversies emerge surrounding on-air talent, particularly in the reality television genre where personal conduct and public image remain integral to programming success. ABC has not provided a timeline for announcing permanent replacement programming.
