Our community has plenty to celebrate this week as 167 Cape May County students earned the opportunity to showcase their artistic talents on the state stage. The impressive group of young artists qualified for the New Jersey State Teen Arts Festival, scheduled for June 1-3, after their participation in the 2026 Cumberland and Cape May County Teen Arts Festival held in Millville on Wednesday, April 22.
The regional festival brought together more than 800 students from across the area for a full day dedicated to artistic expression, learning, and collaboration. It's a testament to the depth of creative talent flourishing in our local schools and the commitment of educators who nurture these gifts.
Students from eight Cape May County schools participated in the event: Ocean City High School, Cape May County Technical High School, Middle Township High School, Wildwood High School, Lower Cape May Regional High School, Middle Township Middle School, Wildwood Middle School, and Avalon Middle School. These young artists engaged in workshops, delivered live performances, and presented their work for adjudication across multiple artistic disciplines.
The festival provided a platform for students to demonstrate their abilities in visual art, music, theater, creative writing, and filmmaking. What makes this event particularly significant is that County Teen Arts Festivals serve as the exclusive pathway for students to earn eligibility for recognition at the state level—making this achievement all the more meaningful for our local participants.
Local dignitaries attended the festival, observing student performances and celebrating the creativity and accomplishments of participants from across the region. The presence of community leaders underscores the value our county places on arts education and youth development.
"The Teen Arts Festival continues to be an incredible opportunity for our young people to express themselves, develop their talents, and connect with professional artists," said Cape May County Commissioner Director Leonard C. Desiderio. "We are proud to support a program that not only celebrates creativity but also opens doors for students to be recognized at the state level."
The Teen Arts Festival receives funding from the Cape May County Board of County Commissioners and the New Jersey State Council on the Arts, reflecting a partnership between local government and state cultural organizations to invest in the next generation of artists.
As these 167 students prepare for the state festival in June, they carry with them not just their individual talents, but the pride and support of our entire community. Their success reminds us that Cape May County is home to exceptional young people whose creativity and dedication deserve recognition and celebration.
